The Situation: A sensitive bereavement and hoarded property

Following a sensitive bereavement in West London (W2), a family was left with the challenging task of clearing and decontaminating a property. The deceased had been a hoarder, and a significant period had passed before the family was granted police access to the residence.

Beyond the emotional weight of the situation, the property presented significant biological hazards. The combination of hoarded items and a trauma scene meant the environment was unsafe for the family to enter or manage themselves. Ideal Response was contacted to provide a professional, compassionate, and highly technical solution to restore the property to a safe state.

The Hazards: Biohazard, sharps and pests

Our specialist technicians conducted a thorough Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) prior to commencing work. Several high-level health and safety concerns were identified:

  • Biological contamination: Presence of blood and bodily fluids requiring specialist remediation.
  • Sharps & physical hazards: Potential for needles or broken glass hidden within the hoarded materials.
  • Pest activity: Typical of long-term hoarded environments where organic matter may be present.
  • Risk of infection: Potential for bloodborne pathogens and cross-contamination across the property.

The Solution: Technical decontamination and sanitisation

The project was scheduled over two days, with an additional day requested by the client for comprehensive sanitisation to ensure absolute peace of mind. The project would consist of hoarder cleaning to remove waste and a specialist trauma clean and decontamination to return the property to a safe condition.

Step 1: Site assessment and PPE

Operatives arrived on-site and donned full specialist PPE, including white disposable coveralls, nitrile gloves, and respiratory protection. A top-to-bottom assessment was conducted to isolate the primary trauma site and prevent any further spread of contaminants.

Step 2: Targeted trauma remediation

Using Decon 7 (D7), a powerful industry-leading decontamination chemical, the team targeted the specific source of the trauma. This ensured that all biological traces were neutralised at a molecular level, rather than just cleaned superficially.

Step 3: Biohazard removal and fogging

All hazardous waste and contaminated hoarded materials were disposed of using regulated hazardous waste bags and strict disposal protocols. To address airborne pathogens and lingering odours, the team utilised professional ULV Fogging. This process disperses a fine biocidal mist that reaches every corner and crevice, ensuring the air and all surfaces are verified safe.

The Outcome: A safe and restored living environment

The Ideal Response team successfully decontaminated all listed items, verifying them as safe for handling before returning them to the family. By identifying and resolving the primary source of contamination early in the process, we ensured that no residual biohazards remained.

The property was handed back to the family in a clean, sanitised, and safe condition. The customer expressed high satisfaction with the outcome, specifically praising the team’s ability to recover personal belongings that the family feared were lost to the contamination.
